Blogging is one of those things that is fun but also easy to forget about. I haven't posted for over a week and I believe that might constitute a cardinal sin among certain blogging circles.
It's been hot on the weekends but cold during the week here in Hong Kong. It's frustrating because you get used to dressing warmly during the week and then when you go out on the weekend, you start cursing yourself for putting on so many layers. Some students at school have found a solution to the problem, or at least their parents have. Hiu Yu in one of my nursery classes wears five layers of clothing no matter what the weather is, not including her coat for cold days. The number of layers remains a constant and is not in any way proportional to the outdoor temperature. I think the idea is that she will stay insulated against both the cold on cold days and the heat on hot days. However, she is frequently too hot, even on the cold days.
I personally find these spells of cold weather to be a great change of pace. When I show up to work in a T-shirt though, the teachers comment on my strength. It's not just me, Lindsay got the same treatment for rolling up her sleeves at work. When it's 20 degrees, the Canadian in me says, "Go with a T-shirt!" I guess it's just social conditioning. I think a T-shirt worn under such circumstances would probably bring to mind the adjectives "casual" or perhaps "appropriate" for an amateur Canadian physiognomist (a word which blogger.com apparently doesn't include in its spelling system). Apparently it denotes bravery and a willingness to deal with hardship in Hong Kong.
With relatively pleasant weather on the weekends, we have made it to Stanley market last Saturday, and Kowloon Walled City today. Stanley is pretty touristy; but if that is an adjective that draws shudders from the general public, then it is touristy in a nice way. Tsim Sha Tsui is touristy, but at times in a P.T. Barnum "a sucker is born every minute" way. Stanley has a lot of things for tourists to buy, but generally at fixed prices. It's nice not to have to bargain with salespeople who offer you a ridiculously inflated price straight off the bat. The prices are reasonable and the quality seems much more assured as a result.
The Walled City is a pleasant stroll. It was technically a part of China proper until 1995 when Hong Kong acquired it from them. It is still within Hong Kong but for some reason was not leased to the British with the rest of the territories. Because of its ambiguous status, there was a reputation of lawlessness there until some altruistic people thought it would be best to tear everything down and build a park. It's a very nice park too. There are even some ruins of the old walled city that some archaeologists excavated when they built the park. We had a nice relaxing time going through it.
If the weather isn't going to get any worse than it has so far, then I really don't need to have my jacket here. Chinese New Year is only in two weeks, and we're really looking forward to going on our Phuket vacation.
